Today's blog post is about the magnificent Magpie!
Magpie: A native bird and one of the foremost songbirds in the world.
Scientific name: Gymnorhina tibicen
Magpies have a lifespan of 25-30 years and are very social and territorial birds. They can form long-lasting friendships and connections with people that are enriching and harmonious for birds and humans. Friendships often form between magpies and humans when a magpie is injured or sick and is being cared for. According to Gisela Kaplan (author of Australian Magpie Biology and Behaviour of an Unusual Songbird), such encounters show that magpies can be gentle and tender birds. They are playful, adaptable, inquisitive, and have minds of their own.
😮Surprising fact: Research has shown that magpies can recognise up to at least 100 individual people! They have excellent recall for human faces.😮
I have an affinity with all birds, but particularly magpies because of their warbling.
It's like they are actually talking to you.
Below are some piccys of a few of my encounters
with this beautiful songbird! And a video here that I took of one very happy maggie!
