My favourite chapter was theĀ Rose.
Ā

Ā
It's such a captivating flower - scent and beauty.
The mention of honeybees and huge violet carpenter bees makingĀ "their way down the rows of rose bushes,
from bloom to bloom,Ā gathering pollen" (p. 132) is magicalĀ to me!
I was fascinated toĀ learnĀ about aromatic plantsĀ in Ancient Egypt and how they wereĀ used to createĀ incense,
as well as theĀ scented oils, tars, and waxes needed for embalming (p. 153).
Flowers evoke emotions, desire, and connection through their perfume, their beauty, and their growth.
As Haskell writes, "Perfume tells the world that we are made from relationship, we are living communities.
We transcend the 'self', not as a metaphor or a mystical experience,Ā
but as a reality experienced in our bodies...Ā
To be 'me,'Ā human, I need 'you,'Ā plant." (p. 157).
